What it actually does

Life insurance

Life insurance pays money to the people you choose if you pass away. It matters most when someone would need additional support without your income — a partner, kids, or a relative you help support.

It replaces an income

If your household would need additional support to pay the bills without your income, cover can replace it for the years your family relies on it.

For example: a household with a mortgage and young children usually needs several years of income replaced.
It clears a big debt

Cover can be sized and timed to match a debt, so a mortgage or loan never falls on your family.

For example: a couple with 18 years left on their mortgage takes a 20-year term policy so the home is protected until it’s paid off.
It covers final expenses

Some people don’t need to replace an income — they just want to be sure a funeral and any last bills won’t burden their family.

For example: someone in their 60s whose kids are grown and mortgage is paid may just want $10,000–$15,000 set aside.

The two decisions that matter

How long, and how much

Almost every difference between life insurance products comes down to these two questions. Get them right and the product picks itself.

How long should it last?

“Whole-life” cover always pays out eventually and can build a small cash value, but costs more. “For-a-period” cover — called Term — is much cheaper and lasts a set number of years, which is ideal while you have a mortgage or kids at home.

For example: if you only need protection until the kids finish college and the house is paid off, a 20-year term policy is affordable.
How much do you need?

AAA’s products cover different ranges. Final-expense Whole Life tops out lower, around $75,000, while Term and Universal go well into the hundreds of thousands — from $50,000 all the way to $3,500,000.

For example: $15,000 for a funeral fits Whole Life; $400,000 to replace income and cover a mortgage fits Term or Universal.
Not sure how either answer applies to you?

Ten short questions — no health questions, no medical exam, and “not sure” is always an answer. We’ll point you at the right cover at the end.

Common questions

The things people ask first

No. You don’t need to be a AAA member to apply for life insurance. Members do receive some perks, including 10% off Life Insurance, and accident cover that is members-only.
Some AAA cover has no health questions and no medical exam, so you’re accepted regardless of health — that’s called Guaranteed Issue. If health is a worry, the quiz routes you there so you can still get protected.
Term lasts a set number of years — 10, 15, 20 or 30 — and gives you the most cover for the lowest monthly cost. Whole Life lasts your whole life, always pays out eventually, builds a small cash value, and costs more. Which is right depends on whether your need is temporary or permanent.
It depends on who relies on you and what you’d want cleared. Around $15,000 covers a funeral and last bills; $400,000 would replace an income and clear a mortgage. AAA Life covers $50,000 to $3,500,000 on Term, and Term rates start from $8/mo.
That’s completely normal, and the quiz is built for it. Every question has a “not sure” answer that never counts against you, and if a few stay unsure we hand you straight to a specialist instead of guessing.
